“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will He not much more clothe you–you of little faith? (Matthew 6:25-26,30).
Matthew 6:27 asks us a very thought-provoking question.“Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life”? Of course the answer is a resounding “no”, nonetheless it doesn’t stop us from fretting about the cares and the things of this world. The poor may worry about where their next meal will come from, having a place to lay their head or staying warm during the winter, while the rich may worry about what next big-ticket item to purchase, how they can upstage their peers or how to make more money for what they have is never enough. Those of us somewhere in the middle may worry about how to get what the wealthy have, how to not end up being poor and what we will leave for the next generation. At the end of the day, this world will pass away and all the temporal things sweated for, will be no more. What is certain is that, death and judgement will come for us all regardless of our economic status, so what we do with the time allotted to us is vital to where we will spend eternity.
There is More to Life
Christ doesn’t forbid us from living and working hard because He understands that we must support our families and work a job to maintain adequate living conditions. The problem is that there is more to life than our physical reality or our circumstances, which lead us to give everything else top billing and relegates seeking God to a distant 2nd or 3rd, if He even makes our list at all. When our focus is squarely on attaining material things, we take our eyes off the spiritual things of life which matter the most and have far-reaching spiritual consequences. We become anxious about everything until it consumes every waking moment and depressed when things don’t turn out the way we plan them too. Scripture tells us to, “not to be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6).
Don’t Worry About It, Pray About It!
When those plans we have set for our lives turn to dust, what else do we have if we don’t have God? He promises to give us all that we need, but our wants are not promised if they are not in His plan for our lives. Rather then stressing ourselves out needlessly, we are told in Matthew 6:33 to, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to us”. Cast all your cares and worries on the Lord and “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your heart and your mind in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7).
Don’t worry about it, pray about it!
