Set Your Standards

By Kendra Clarke

“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).

It is important to set standards for how you expect to be treated by someone vying for your time and attention. Understand that a man will only treat you the way you allow him to treat you. If your standards are too low, he will not bother to show up, and if he does there won’t be an incentive to rise to the occasion. If the bar is too high, he probably won’t even try. A man who is truly in it, to win it will not accept less from a woman he sees long-term potential in. It doesn’t matter if he is a minister or a prince (yeah I’ve been there and done that), if God has not ordained the relationship, there is absolutely nothing you can do to will the relationship to last.

The Right Man Will

Life is hard, but love should be easy. When God is in the midst, you don’t have to settle for less than you absolutely deserve and you don’t have to worry about who, what, when, where or how because when you get right and submit to God’s plan for your life, the right man will eventually show up. In essence, don’t worry about whether having standards will scare him off. The right kind of man will appreciate the fact that you value yourself enough to have standards and would have it no other way.

“A woman’s heart should be so hidden in God that a man has to seek Him just to find her” (Maya Angelou).
