Strongholds Created & Fortified

By Kendra Clarke

Before we were born, God says that, “Our frame was not hidden from Him when we were made in the secret place, when we were woven together in the depths of the earth. His eyes saw our unformed body; all the days ordained for us were written in His book before one of them came to be” (Psalm 139:15-17). When we came into this world, we were innocent and pure without a care or a worry. When we were hungry; we were fed, when we cried; we were held. We laughed and played, we loved everyone and hate was far from who we were. As young children, we were so full of life and imagination; we spoke confidently and in faith. We were going to be astronauts, lawyers, doctors or singers, etc. and no one could tell us otherwise. We believed it and we felt that we could achieve it. Then the world stepped in and life as we knew it, began to change.

Our Eyes Became Opened

As we grew older, some how along the way, our eyes became opened and some of the desires of the world began to creep in. Our faith was rocked, as we began to care more about what others thought of us and fitting in, than standing out. We couldn’t wait to become adults because being able to do what we wanted to do, when we wanted to do it, seemed cool at the time. Only, we couldn’t yet fathom the level of responsibility that came along with that freedom. Spiritual, mental and emotional strongholds were beginning to form due to some of our choices, but ignorance is truly bliss. If not addressed in our earlier years, bigger problems would await.

Sin is Now Gloried

As adults, our focus has been on attaining earthly riches and satisfying our fleshly desires. It’s a trap so many find themselves in, even though we are told in Romans 12:2, “To not be conformed to this world; but be ye transformed by the renewing of our minds”. Instant gratification is so often preferred over delayed gratification, though that which is obtained easily isn’t appreciated or valued in the long run. No one wants to work hard for anything anymore including sex, love, marriage and thus we are willing to lose our souls in the process. Sin is now gloried and worn as a badge of pride while God’s Word is subjective and we wonder why our lives have taken such a turn.

Strongholds Have Been Built

We are busy experiencing our so-called freedom, but as the years fly on by, we realize that we have not, in fact, been living like we are free. According to 1 Peter 2:16 we should, “Live as people who are free, not using our freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God”. Jesus paid for our freedom by what He accomplished on the cross, but many of us have not been walking in our victory for a very long time. “For freedom, Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery” (Galatians 5:1). The enemy has found entry and strongholds have thus been built and fortified in our minds, souls, emotions, etc. He has been out to push our buttons, but we have been ignorant of his devices and unaware of his schemes. Tearing down those strongholds will require us to fight from a position of victory and not one of defeat.

“The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds” (2 Corinthians 10:4).
