Chickens Coming Home to Roost

By Kendra Clarke

Many politicians have sold their souls for profit or gain. They have been willing to say and do anything to further their own ambitions to the detriment of the masses, their constituents. They have sown discord and division all for the sake of politics and the hopes of attaining earthly riches and notoriety, while the rest of us pay the price for their greed. I am not faulting anyone for wanting to better themselves or climb that ladder of success, but to sell your soul in the process to obtain earthly treasures is not at all what God intended. The Apostle Paul in Philippians 2:4 says,

“Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

Their love of money and power has indeed clouded their judgment, and pursuing their own self-interests is all there is. Matthew 6:24 tells us that,

“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You can not serve God and money.”

What Rep. John Boehner and others like him forget or fail to realize, after they have taken their oaths of office, is that it was never about them. They are in Office not to be served, but to be of service. They were placed in their positions for a higher purpose by God. In us submitting to their authority, they are to submit to God the highest authority.

“Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God” (Romans 13:1).

As Rep. John Boehner prepares to step down from his current position as Speaker of the House and retires at the end of October, we see the very people he chose to align himself with, stab and twist the knife in his back while celebrating his decision to resign. Imagine that… Did he think they would be loyal? I couldn’t help but think that the “chickens have come home to roost”. I’m sure that he will be just fine as now he’ll be free to go rogue as a lobbyist somewhere and make tons of money, but if I was given the opportunity to interview the Speaker, I would ask him, “Was it all worth it?”

“What good was it for you to gain the whole world but lose your soul? What can you give in exchange for your very soul” (Matthew 16:26).
